Municipal Courts

The Municipal Court of Warrenton serves as the City’s local court of law. Previously referred to as the Recorder’s Court, the Municipal Court continues under state law (O.C.G.A. § 36-32-1) and the City Charter as the judicial body with jurisdiction over city ordinance violations and certain state law offenses occurring within city limits.

In Warrenton, the duties and authority of the Municipal Court include:
  • Trying and punishing offenses against city ordinances and handling traffic cases under municipal jurisdiction.
  • Imposing fines, imprisonment, community service, or work detail as permitted by law.
  • Enforcing judgments, bonds, and bail to ensure accountability.
  • Binding over cases to the Superior Court of Warren County when state law violations are involved.
  • Maintaining order in court proceedings, administering oaths, and issuing warrants, subpoenas, and summonses.
  • Operating under a Municipal Court Judge, with a Judge Pro Tem appointed to serve in the Judge’s absence.

Municipal Judge

Durwood R. Davis
Biography: Graduate of Columbus State University and Mississippi College School of Law. Experience includes private practice in Metro Atlanta with service as City Attorney and Assistant City Court Solicitor for the City of Mountain Park. Later served as Assistant District Attorney in the Enotah Judicial Circuit and as Chief Assistant District Attorney in the Toombs Judicial Circuit. Member of the Basic Litigation Faculty for the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia for 20 years, training new prosecutors in trial advocacy. Retired from state service in 2017 and currently operates a private law practice in Harlem, Georgia.
