City Council

​The Warrenton City Council serves as the legislative branch of city government and, together with the Mayor, forms the governing authority of the City. Under the City Charter, the Council is composed of five members and the Mayor, one of whom is selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore.
Representation and Elections
  • The Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tempore are elected at-large by all qualified voters of Warrenton.
  • The remaining four Councilmembers are elected by district:
    • District 1, Post 1
    • District 1, Post 2
    • District 2, Post 1
    • District 2, Post 2
  • Each Councilmember serves a four-year term and must be a qualified elector, a registered voter, and meet the residency and constitutional qualifications required of members of the Georgia House of Representatives.
Powers and Duties
​
The City Council is vested with all legislative powers of the City of Warrenton. Its responsibilities include:
  • Adopting ordinances, resolutions, rules, and regulations to protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents.
  • Approving the City’s annual budget and overseeing municipal finances.
  • Establishing policies for city services, programs, and departments.
  • Holding inquiries and investigations into the affairs of the City and the conduct of its offices and agencies.
  • Approving appointments and exercising oversight of executive actions.
  • Maintaining transparency through public meetings, records, and procedures.
Council Meetings
  • The Council holds regular meetings at times and locations set by ordinance, with all meetings open to the public except where state law provides otherwise.
  • Special meetings may be called by the Mayor or any two Councilmembers, with proper notice provided.
  • A quorum of at least four members (Mayor and three Councilmembers, or four Councilmembers) is required to conduct official business.
